How to delete ALL your unread emails in Gmail

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the sheer number of unread emails in your Gmail inbox? We’ve all been there! Those unopened emails, whether they’re promotional materials, newsletters, spam, or just simple updates, have a way of piling up and turning your inbox into a cluttered mess. It’s not just an eyesore, but it can also cause stress and make it difficult to find the important messages among the chaos.

There’s good news, though! Gmail has built-in tools that can help you tidy up your inbox in just a few clicks. One such tool is the ability to delete all your unread emails at once. This can be a real game-changer, especially if you have hundreds, or even thousands, of unread messages lurking in your inbox.

By following our simple guide, you can swiftly deal with the clutter, leaving you with a clean, manageable inbox. You’ll not only save time, but also reduce digital stress and increase your productivity. So, let’s dive in and start the clean-up.

Here’s how to delete all unopened (unread) emails in your Gmail inbox:

  1. Open Gmail in a web browser.
  2. In the search box at the top, type is:unread then hit Enter. This will filter and display all the unread emails in your inbox.
  3. Click the checkbox at the top of the list to select all emails on the current page.
  4. If you have more than one page of unread emails, you’ll see a message above the emails saying “All 50 conversations on this page are selected. Select all conversations that match this search”. Click on the “Select all conversations that match this search” link.
  5. Click the “Delete” button (it looks like a trash can) at the top of the page.

Remember, deleting emails moves them to the Trash, where they stay for 30 days before they’re permanently deleted. If you want to delete them permanently right away, you can do so by going to the “Trash” folder, then clicking “Empty Trash now” at the top of the list.

Also, please note that this will delete all unread emails, not just those in the inbox. If you want to specifically delete unread emails in the inbox, you can modify the search query to in:inbox is:unread.
